Pickyeatingadults.com is a refuge for those who have spent their lives avoiding dinner parties and cursing the office potluck.

Very interesting. I don’t really like the term “picky,” though. It has a slightly negative connotation for me.

I don’t know if I’d go so far as to say I have this disorder, if you can even call it that. Seems like a bit of a crutch to me.

I have to go to a potluck office lunch this Friday *groan*.
Don’t know what to bring, don’t know what I’ll eat… however, I’m thinking of taking something ironic, like maybe a salad.
Hi Bob
Thanks for the link. How d’you mean “crutch”?
Claire
Please don’t take offense. My meaning was not to single out Adult Picky Eaters specifically. I was just commenting on the would-be posers out there (note I do *not* mean the people incapable of it who truly *do* need genuine help) that use disorders as a crutch as an easy way to get out of helping themselves. My meaning was that I, myself, just me, personally, am not ready to admit I have such a disorder just yet. I realize it’s a touchy subject for some and del.icio.us doesn’t exactly give a lot of room in their descriptions to wax philosophical about such things, so it can be tough to get the correct meaning across, especially in written word.
Oh no, none taken. I just wasn’t sure what you meant.
I’m not sure it’s exactly fair to say that it could be a crutch though. Not being able to help oneself terribly effectively is exactly what makes it a disorder in my view, rather than the other way around.
There may well be secondary gains for some people who self-identify as “picky”, but for most of us, the losses far outweigh any putative “gains”.
There are some recent posts on Adult Picky Eaters UKabout the issue of whether or not to call it a disorder, and what people feel are the implications for them of so doing. If it’s something that you can’t help, and that you feel diminishes your quality of life, or damages your health, then it kind of fits the definition of a disorder – if not, then not I guess. Your mileage may vary.
