A waste of a blog entry, but I needed to test blogging through email.

I’m laying in bed, watching John Carpenter’s The Thing. What’s the deal with Kurt Russel’s sombrero/cowboy hat/prospector hat? I always remember that bothering me as a kid. Thankfully, he doesn’t wear it for very long.

Random act of kindness?

One of the big reasons I bought the phone I bought was for its Bluetooth capabilities, but I bought the Nokia 6620 specifically because it’s supported by a piece of software called Salling Clicker from Jonas Salling and Salling Software.

I have an ATI Remote Wonder which worked great on my old setup (a Quicksilver G4 with Jaguar and Panther), but stopped working after installing Tiger. I’m guessing this is due to the way Apple changed the underlying kernel and how it uses kernel extensions, which I think the Remote Wonder driver relied on. I tried installing the Remote Wonder software on my G5, but still had problems with it.

So, I’m quite familiar with using a remote to control my computer wirelessly. I figured Salling Clicker wouldn’t be much more than being able to map hotkeys to the keypad buttons on the phone. Boy did I underestimate that one. Think of it more as remote scripting with Applescript. I’ve done everything from controlling iTunes (playing existing playlists, view album art, adjusting volume, change ratings, search for particular songs, etc…), checking and reading my e-mail, playing iPhoto slideshows, and (most importantly) fully controlling VLC media player.

That last reason was pretty much the sole reason for getting the Nokia 6620. When my ATI Remote Wonder stoped working, that’s when I started looking into Salling Clicker as an alternative. Had I known then that Clicker was that good, I would’ve tried to find a way to get it setup sooner.

What’s so great about it is that it uses Applescript, so if you can do it in Applescript, you can pretty much do it with the phone.
